"She's so lucky, she's a star
But she cry, cry, cries
in her lonely heart, thinking
If there's nothing missing in my life
Then why do these tears come at night"
The Song & The Video
"Lucky" is the second single from pop singer Britney Spears' second album Oops!... I Did It Again. It was released in 2000. The song is about an actress, who despite being very "lucky" and seemingly having it all - fame, wealth, beauty, is truly lonely on the inside for unknown reasons.
Directed by Dave Meyers in Orlando, FL, the music video for Lucky starts out with Britney as a narrator of a play showing the life of a very famous Hollywood actress named Lucky (also played by Spears). We see Lucky in her mansion as well. As beautiful and rich as she is, we see her about a set as she is acting looking quite distressed. Through this scene, the narrator Spears also sits above in the 'stars', throwing down glittery sparkles. Next, we find Lucky having her make-up put on and then at the Academy Awards accepting her Oscar ("Best actress, and the winner is Lucky!"). Lucky looks very happy as she accepts the Oscar and smiles at her fans, but it is not true happiness. As she makes her way away from her screaming fans and back into her limo, she catches a glimpse of the narrator Spears in the crowd, and also becomes distressed again. The video ends with Lucky crying herself to sleep, her make-up already stained. The curtains close, ending the video.
Britney Jean Spears (born December 2, 1981) is an American recording artist and entertainer. Spears first appeared on national television in 1992 as a contestant on the Star Search program, and went on to star in Disney Channel's television series The New Mickey Mouse Club from 1993 to 1994. After releasing her debut album Baby One More Time in 1999, she was established as a pop icon, reviving teen pop in the late 1990s.
Though she had a very successful career as a singer, Spears' private life was not so "lucky". She had a famous romance with Justin Timberlake. In early 2002, Spears's four-year relationship with Timberlake ended. Timberlake's 2002 song "Cry Me a River" and its music video, which featured an actress resembling Spears, caused speculation that Spears had been unfaithful. Timberlake, however, denied that his song referred to her.
Spears married childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander on January 3, 2004, at The Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas. The marriage lasted 55 hours, ending with an annulment.
In July 2004, Spears announced her engagement to Kevin Federline, three months after they met. Federline had recently been in a relationship with actress Shar Jackson, who was eight months pregnant with their second child. On the night of September 18, Spears married Federline in a surprise ceremony. Spears gave birth to her first child, Sean Preston Federline, nearly one year later, on September 14, 2005.
Spears gave birth to her second son, Jayden James Federline, on September 12 2006. Spears stayed in an off-shore drug rehabilitation for less than 24 hours on February 16 2007. The following night at a hair salon in California she shaved her head with electric clippers. She divorced Federline in July 2007.
Throughout 2007, Spears's behaviour received heightened media attention, including attacking a paparazzi vehicle with an umbrella. Spears lost physical custody of her children to Federline on October 1.
Vanessa Grigoriadis reported in "The Tragedy of Britney Spears" (2008), her cover story for Rolling Stone, that "more than any other star today, Britney epitomizes the crucible of fame for the famous: loving it, hating it and never quite being able to stop it from destroying you".
Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson, June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962; baptized Norma Jeane Baker) was an American actress, singer, sex symbol, and model.
After spending much of her childhood in foster homes, Monroe began a career as a model, which led to a film contract in 1946. Her early roles were minor, but her performances in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve (both 1950) were well received. As her career progressed, she became known as a sex symbol. She was praised for her comedic ability in such films as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire and The Seven Year Itch, and became one of Hollywood's most popular performers.
Her marriage to baseball player Joe DiMaggio failed. While married to playwright Arthur Miller, she studied at the Actors Studio and formed Marilyn Monroe Productions.
The final years of Monroe's life were marked by illness, personal problems, and a reputation for being unreliable and difficult to work with. The circumstances of her death, from an overdose of barbiturates, have been the subject of conjecture. Though officially classified as a "probable suicide", the possibility of an accidental overdose has not been ruled out, while conspiracy theorists argue that she was murdered.
The song Lucky makes an obvious reference to a Hollywood star resembling Marilyn.
"Falling Down" is a single by British band Duran Duran from their 2007 album Red Carpet Massacre. The music video for "Falling Down" centres around anorexic-looking models in rehab with the members of Duran Duran acting as doctors and therapists, wearing white suits and thick glasses, counselling a group of the models and passing round pills. The band has publicly stated that pop star Britney Spears served as inspiration for the main character in the music video. Duran Duran’s video, Falling Down, indeed seems to be a message to Britney Spears and probably other Hollywood party girls. It is about rehab and "falling down". The focus is on a Hollywood star who looks amazingly like Britney…
My Point of View
Many teenagers become world famous particularly due to their appearance on Disney Channel. The list of "Disney teens" includes names such as Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana), Hilary Duff (Lizzie McGuire), Zac Efron (Highschool Musical) and the Jonas Brothers (Camp Rock). They are the products of sudden fame who have an uncertain future. Undoubtedly the Disney teen who epitomizes the "Marilyn Monroe" lifestyle is Lindsay Lohan. Lohan rose to stardom with her leading roles in the Disney films The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and Herbie: Fully Loaded. Despite her fame, her success and her unquestionable charisma, Lohan's personal life has been a frequent subject of celebrity and tabloid journalism.
Lohan has had a series of car accidents that have been widely reported, with minor crashes in August 2004, October 2005, and November 2006, when Lohan suffered minor injuries because a paparazzo who was following her for a photograph hit her car. Lohan is also well known on the celebrity party scene. She and her representatives used to tell that her various late arrivals and absences from the film sets were the result of illness; but it was well known that her ongoing all night heavy partying was the real reason for her so-called 'exhaustion'.
In 2006, Lohan attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. On January 18, 2007, Lohan checked herself in to the Wonderland Center rehabilitation facility. Lohan checked out on February 16, 2007 after completing a 30-day stay.
On May 26, 2007, Lohan lost control of her car and ran the vehicle up a curb. Beverly Hills police also found a "usable" amount of cocaine in her car and the police lab detected cocaine in her blood. After receiving treatment for minor injuries, Lohan was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. On August 23, 2007, Lohan pleaded guilty to cocaine use and driving under its influence and was sentenced to one day in jail and 10 days community service. She was also ordered to pay fines and complete an alcohol education program, and was placed on three years probation. “It is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs,” Lohan said in a statement. Lohan began dating singer Aaron Carter in 2001. It was reported that Carter left Hilary Duff for Lohan, but soon broke up with Lohan and resumed dating Duff. Duff and Lohan were later reported to have been involved in a "feud" with each other over their relationship with Carter. In 2007, Duff and Lohan had reconciled. Lohan attended the release party for Duff's album Dignity and Duff told People magazine that she thought Lohan was "fun" and "a nice girl".
In 2008, the media began commenting on Lohan and Samantha Ronson, who were regularly seen being affectionate in public. In July 2008, several newspapers published opinion pieces describing their relationship as romantic. Lohan's father has been very outspoken in his disapproval of Lohan's relationship with Samantha Ronson. Lohan opened up about her relationship with Ronson in the December 2008 issue of Harper's Bazaar magazine. She stated, "I think it's pretty obvious who I'm seeing... I think it's no shock to anyone that it's been going on for quite some time... She's a wonderful person and I love her very much." Lohan said her family, with the exception of her father Michael, had been supportive of her relationship with Ronson.
Nobody knows for sure if Lohan will get involved in a new scandal or if she will ever mend her ways. One thing is clear though: for many people like Lohan and Spears, fame is hard to cope with. In my opinion, fame is like wine: you must learn to drink it so that you don't get intoxicated with it.
