Tainted Love (Soft Cell)

"Sometimes I feel I've got to
Run away I've got to
Get away
From the pain that you drive into the heart of me
The love we share
Seems to go nowhere
And I've lost my light
For I toss and turn I can't sleep at night"

The Songs

In 2004 the band The Killers released the album Hot Fuss, which contained the song Jenny was a friend of mine. If you listen to the song it really fits with a murder thing. To begin with the song starts out with"A police car Was outside your house today I haven't seen you in a couple of days" and then "Your mother looked scared But she didn’t cry" and  "On one hand I've got myself to blame But on the other it’s always the same." Finally the chorus "Where is she Where is she Where is my baby girl? I’ve seen you You’re crazy What have you done with my whole wide world?" could be the mother talking to the killer. The lines "she couldn't scream while I held her close, I swore I'd never let her go" seem to have been uttered by the girl's boyfriend when being interrogated by the police: the song suggests the boy suffocated her. This is further reinforced by the boy's words: "I know my rights".
Released as a single in August 1987 by the group The Smiths, Girlfriend in a Coma clearly refers to an abusive boyfriend who put his girlfriend into a coma by beating her too harshly one night. As a result, she ends up in serious condition at the hospital. The lines "There were times when I could have murdered her
(But you know, I would hate anything to happen to her) - No, I don't want to see her" explicitly show the boy's guilty conscience.
Perhaps the most explicit song about a romance that ends up in death is "Used to Love Her", a song by American hard rock
band Guns N' Roses. Its lyrics are about a man murdering a woman and burying her in his backyard. Axl Rose, lead songer of the band, then goes on to say that they are "happier this way." Axl said that song made fun of songs about men who are treated badly by women. Axl Rose has said it is nothing more than a joke song not to be taken seriously. In fact, on the cover of the LP, the blurb under the headline "Used to Love Her" says that it's "a joke, nothing more." It was also said that the song is really about Axl Rose's dog who he had to put to sleep. Funny or not, the lyrics cause a certain uneasiness in the ones that listen to them.

The Facts

In August 2008 a sixteen-year-old girl called Gabriela Núñez sent a text message to her mother to warn her boyfriend, aged 23, was going to kill her. Her boyfriend ended up killing her but he said he had shot her accidentally when he was threatening the girl. According to his version, he had an "official girlfriend" and wanted to end the parallel affair he had with Gabriela. The girl's father denied his story saying that his daughter had wanted to end the affair with him a long time before he killed her but he wanted to keep the relationships he had with both girls. This story took place in the city f Rosario, Argentina.
Many years before Gabriela's murder, on May 27th 1996, a boy received a mysterious telephone call. It was his friend, Fabián Tablado, who confessed he had killed his girlfriend, Carolina Aló, by stabbing her repeatedly, inflicting a total of 113 stab wounds. This case, which shocked Argentine public opinion, happened in the city of Tigre.

My Point of View

I guess there are several clues which show a girl that the relationship she has with her boyfriend might end up in a tragedy. It is not only physical violence -the most obvious one- she should pay attention to: it is also the psychological abuse she may suffer. Jealousy, undermining one's self-esteem and constant humiliation
are clear indications that there is something wrong that has to be changed in the relationship. Trusting this problem to somebody and breaking up at the right time might save a woman's life.
